Dorothy F. Johnson
March 3, 1925 - March 10, 2010

Dorothy F. Johnson of Crawfordsville died at 9:45 a.m. on March 10, 2010, at her home after a battle with cancer. She was 85.

Born on March 3, 1925, to parents James Otis and Valia (Conner) Long in Boone County, Mrs. Johnson had retired as the co-owner of Morgan & Chesterson Gravel Co.

She first married James R. Chesterson, and after his death she married Gerald Johnson in 1983 in Crawfordsville.

She attended schools in Wyoming and was a 1943 graduate of Jamestown High School and was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post # 1431 Auxiliary.

She leaves behind two daughters, Tona Guinn of Crawfordsville and Donna (Gary) Hockett of Waveland, as well as one sister, Donna (Ralph) Shumate of Lebanon. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, James, Joseph and Jason Guinn and Carri Wilhite and Chad Hockett, as well as 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1982 and her second husband in 1988, as well as her longtime companion John Ames and three brothers, Wilbert, William and Darol Long, as well as her parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., in Crawfordsville with The Rev. Jim Ranard officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the same day. Cremation was selected.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Cancer Program, C/O VFW Post 1431, 117 N. Water St., Crawfordsville, IN 47933.

James William Cullings

Mr. Cullings died Feb. 25, 2010, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana at the age of 90.

Born Feb. 12, 1920, to James Johnson Cullings and Laura Frances Cook Cullings, he spent his youth in Indianapolis, Arizona and Arkansas. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, in 1938 and was a selected member of the upper 10 percent of his graduating class in the prestigious Tech Legion. After the war, he also spent time at Indiana University in Bloomington prior to going into business for himself.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was stationed at a variety of ship and shore duty locations including: Staten Island, New York City, Guam, and the South Pacific. He served aboard the USS Thurston, USS Proteus and the USS Castle Rock. He was selected to be a member of a special team aboard the USS Castle Rock in 1945 to investigate, and then produce a top secret report, on the Japanese defenses at Chi Chi Jima. After the war he served at various times in the Naval Reserve. In 1968 he went back on full-time duty at the Naval Reserve Center in Indianapolis as a recruiter. He retired as a Master Chief Personnelman (E-9) on Feb. 12, 1980. At the time of his retirement, he had accumulated 38 years of service, both as a drilling member and on active duty.

On his uniform he proudly displayed these awards: Good Conduct-USN with two Bronze Stars, Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Ribbon, WWII American Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, WW II Victory Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Reserve-USN Ribbon, Expert Rifle Marksman with E device-USN. Additionally, he proudly wore the Command Master Chief badge, indicating that he was the senior enlisted man at his station.

During those years as a civilian and as a drilling reservist, he was an employee of Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, a Sales Manager for Phillips Petroleum in West Central Indiana (1947-1959) and a salesman for L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis (1959-1960). He and his wife Syble built the Big Dipper Ice Cream Shop on South Mill St., at Milligan Park in Crawfordsville in 1955, selling it in 1968. He also sold real estate for a number of years.

His memberships included: the First Baptist Church of Crawfordsville; Life Member of Kismet Temple, York Rite, New Hyde Park, N.Y.; Post 72, American Legion, Crawfordsville; Life member DAV, Post 52, Indianapolis; Life Member VFW, Post 1431, Crawfordsville.

Three children, Douglas Cullings, Crawfordsville, Indiana; Lynn Thompson, Bossier City, Louisiana; and Casey McFann of California, Maryland, survive him. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren, Tara Thompson Bremer, Anthony, Alexander and Marcus Thompson, Karen Thompson McKee, A.J. , J.D. and Shannon Cullings, Jennifer and Sara McFann and seven great grandchildren: Tucker and Calvin Bremer; Sabrina McKee; Morgan , Kristian, Tyler and Madisen Cullings.

The family will receive friends at 3 P.M and a Memorial Service is planned for 4 P.M. March 6th at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington Street, Crawfordsville.

Welthea Mae Rule
March 25, 1919 - February 18, 2010

Mrs. Welthea Mae Rule, 90, of Crawfordsville died at 11:27 a.m. Thursday in Hickory Creek Healthcare of Crawfordsville of natural causes.

Mrs. Rule was a homemaker and earlier in her life had worked at the A&P Grocery and Rexall Drug Store, both at Frankfort.

She was a 1937 graduate of Mulberry High School and a 50-year member of Mulberry/Jefferson Order of the Eastern Star and a 15-year member of Tri Kappa Sorority. She was also a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church at Crawfordsville since 1958.

She was born March 25, 1919, at Wauseon, Ohio, to Frederick I. and Fern Miller Lust. She married Jewell Rule on Aug. 14, 1939, at Bloomington. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas J. of Crawfordsville, Richard L. (Dianne) of Ashville, N.C., and Jerry L. (Julie) of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandsons, Benjamin, Samuel and Lee Rule; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Miriam Lust, Arthella Phelps, Catherine Doehrman, Guyneth Maines and Evelyn Laymon.

A private family service will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Powers-Priebe Funeral Home at 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville, with Mike Parks officiating. A public visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery Mausoleum at Crawfordsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association at 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, Ill., 60674, or to a favorite charity.

Margie May Lauy
June 8, 1922 - February 17, 2010

Mrs. Margie May Lauy of Crawfordsville died at 9:50 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2010, at the Lane House Nursing Home in Crawfordsville. She was 87.

Born on June 8, 1922 to parents Hershel and Bernice Imogene (Barnhart) Beecher, Mrs. Lauy lived in Balhinch most of her life. She worked most of her later life caring for others as a caregiver. Earlier in her life, she worked at New Market Elementary School, Crawfordsville Country Club and the Holiday Inn. She first married Severino Gaviola. After his death, she married Eugene Lauy.

She was a 1941 graduate of New Market High School.

She leaves behind five daughters: Maria (Ralph) McFerran of Mt. Vernon, Ky., Bernice (Mike) Gelger of Attica, Ind., Brenda Stout of New Market, Patricia Southwood of Crawfordsville, Loretta Huffman of Lancaster, Penn.; three sons, Norman (Connie) Gaviola of Crawfordsville, Tom Lauy of Crawfordsville, Rodney Lauy of New Market; one brother, Hershel (Madeline) Beecher, Jr. of the Phillipines; four sisters, Betty (Ernest) Wilson of Crawfordsville, Barbara Walden of Crawfordsville, Beverly (Richard) Caldwell of Waveland, Ind., Jean Ellen (Theron) Brumbaugh of Center Point, Ind.; as well as 32 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands and one brother, Walter Beecher.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St. in Crawfordsville with The Rev. Michael Whitacre officiating. A viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.

Cremation will follow the service.

Wanda Louise Shirley

Mrs. Wanda Louise Shirley of Crawfordsville died at 12:40 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2010 at the St. Clare Medical Center in Crawfordsville. She was 70.

She was born in Indianapolis on March 11, 1939 to parents Owen and Edna (Reese) Polson. She had been a Residential Counselor for the Houston Group and had also worked at Carman Nursing Home, both in Crawfordsville.

She married Gene Shirley on Dec. 14, 1963, in Glasgow, Ky. She was a member of Grace Avenue Church of God in Crawfordsville and a graduate of Glasgow, Ky. High School.

She leaves behind her husband, four daughters, Vickie (Juan) Garcia of New Market, Ind., Karen (Bob) Holman of Auburn, Ky., Melissa Shirley of Crawfordsville, Tami (Frank) Hernandez of Waynetown; one son, Ricky (Linda) Bell of Glasgow, Ky.; one sister, Judy (Lloyd) Britt of Glasgow; and 13 grandchildren, as well as four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Mackenzie Wallace.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St. in Crawfordsville, with The Rev. Tony Raley officiating. A viewing will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19.

Burial will be at Mace Community Cemetery in Mace, Ind.

Ina D. Watson
May 3, 1934 - February 12, 2010

Mrs. Ina D. Watson, of Crawfordsville, died at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was 75.

Mrs. Watson, born on May 3, 1934 to parents Bedford and Martha (Abney) Pruitt in Monroe, Ky., worked as a homemaker.

She married Miron Watson on Jan. 9, 1953 in Indianapolis. He survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Mark) Doty of Crawfordsville and Carolyn Watson of Noblesville; four brothers, Russell Pruitt of Danville, Ind., James Pruitt of Indianapolis, Jimmy Pruitt of Tompkinsville, Ky., Bedford Pruitt, Jr., of Indianapolis. She also leaves behind one grandchild, Carri Grissom, and one great grandchild, Tod Kirchgraber.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Jessie Pruitt, two sisters, Roxie Tulley and Lucille Rayburn, and one grandson, Tod Schooler.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home. Cremation followed the services.

Richard Lee McMurray
March 28, 1928 - February 10, 2010

Richard Lee McMurray of Indianapolis and formerly of Crawfordsville and Monrovia, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at Northwest Nursing Home Indianapolis. He was 81.

Mr. McMurray was born in Crawfordsville to parents Richard Isaac and Ola (Dowell) McMurray on March 28, 1928. He had been an aerospace engineer at Twiggs Industry in Martinsville, Ind., for 25 years. He then owned Mac's Sunoco Service Station in Monrovia from 1970 until 1988. He retired in 1988 and moved back to Crawfordsville in 2005.

He married Carol Maxine Rainey on Aug. 20, 1949 in Crawfordsville. She preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents.

He was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and received an Industrial Engineering degree from the Chicago Institute of Technology. He enjoyed drag racing and was the 1979 Truckers Grand National Champion.

He leaves behind three daughters: Carol (Sam) Miller of Speedway, Ind.; Linda Bell of Speedway, Ind.; and Janet (Merl) McCurry of La Canto, Fla. He also leaves behind two sons, Richard D. (Sheri) McMurray of Crawfordsville, Matthew (Christina) McMurray of Terre Haute, Ind., and one brother, Donald McMurray of Crawfordsville and 15 grandchildren, as well as nine great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. with The Rev. Zachary Rainey officiating at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., in Crawfordsville.

The viewing will take place the same day from 4-7 p.m., with cremation following the funeral service.

Ronald Dale Yund
March 18, 1964 - February 8, 2010

Mr. Ronald Dale Yund, 45, of Crawfordsville, passed away Feb. 8, 2010.

Mr. Yund was born March 18, 1964 to Ronald Yund and Jan Reid in Danville, Ill. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1982 and later earned an associate degree in business from Indiana Institute of Technology.

He was a machine operator for Voestalpine in Lafayette for eight years.

He married Brenda Sering in 1998.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Corey, Paige, Quentin and Keegan Yund all of Crawfordsville; father Ron Yund; step-mother Bonnie Yund; mother Jan Yund; two sisters, LeAnne (Neil) Brown and Beth (Mike) Daley; a brother, Dave (Patty) Yund; three nephews, Jacob Daley, Ben Brown and Austin Yund; and three nieces, Emily Daley, Alyssa Yund and Alison Brown.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, 211 S. Walnut St. in Crawfordsville with The Rev. Keith Strain officiating. Burial will follow at Mace Community Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects two hours prior to the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made on behalf of Mr. Yund's children at Lafayette Bank & Trust, 134 S. Washington St. in Crawfordsville.
