He was a WWII Army veteran, serving two tours of duty in France and Germany where he saw combat. He received the American Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and WWII Victory Medal. Following his discharge, he returned to Kentucky and married Mary Jo Payne. They moved to Louisville and began their family, raising 5 children. He worked at International Harvestor for 6 years and then at General Electric as a machine set-up man for 32 years. After retirement, he and Mary Jo travelled with best friends Frances and Harry Polsgrove, but the happiest times were spent with their 3 grandchildren, who gave them many fun filled times.

Preston was musically inclined and was a self-taught guitarist. He was a huge "real" country music fan whose favorites were George Jones, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, Jr.

He was a great outdoorsman and handyman. He really enjoyed hunting and fishing and could repair anything broken and make it better that it was when it was new.

He loved sitting in his swing and spent many hours contemplating life and  went to Hardee's everyday to meet his buddies to discuss the world situation and how to fix it.

Preston respected money, knew the value of the dollar and how it worked. He would always ask "do I really need it" before buying anything.

He worked very hard to provide for his family, who were his first priority. He only spoke when he felt he had something important to say and did not like to bring attention to himself.
